Fed Apprenticeship Program Update
Federal Update: Apprenticeship Programs Expansion
By Rob Sanger
President Trump issued an Executive Order (EO) recently to expand national apprenticeship programs and, since coming into office, the Trump Administration has been ramping up comments around skilling-up workers for good-paying manufacturing jobs.
CMTA is tracking the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Apprenticeship funding to ensure we can take advantage of new training programs for California manufacturers. The DOL is dispersing approximately $90 million this fiscal year in apprenticeship grant funds to employer groups, unions and trade associations.
This EO instructs the Secretary of Labor to consider proposing regulations that promote the development of apprenticeship programs by third parties such as CMTA. We are already working with existing apprentice grant holders to add funds to serve our members. CMTA will track and may submit proposals to any new requests for proposals that are posted by the Department of Labor.
This EO directs the Secretary of Education to establish a task force on Apprenticeship Expansion. CMTA member companies are encouraged to join this task force to help direct the implementation of new apprenticeship programs.
Now is the time to engage in your local workforce investment boards to let them know your workforce needs. Please contact me, Rob Sanger, at 916-498-3334 or firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in apprenticeship updates.
