Best known as the North State Manufacturer’s Directory, or simply Grow Manufacturing, our group is driven by local manufacturers, hosted by Northern Rural Training and Employment Consortium (NoRTEC), and supported by PG&E, with participation from many additional organizations.
Launched in 2013 with this North State Manufacturer’s Directory, and aiming to increase business-to-business connections among regional manufacturers, suppliers and resources, we held the inaugural Manufacturing Expo at Chico State in October 2014. That event focused on creating student awareness of manufacturing careers.
The Expo attracted over 1200 attendees, primarily from the K-12 and college communities, with over 20 manufacturers from Butte, Shasta and Nevada counties exhibiting.
According to an Applied Economics model, 100 manufacturing jobs contribute $43.9 million to the north state economy. An oft-cited figure from California Manufacturers and Technology Association (CMTA) estimates that for California as a whole, one manufacturing job supports two and half additional jobs in the state.
On hand to accept the CALED award were representatives from NoRTEC and PG&E, as well as Butte College; CSU, Chico; City of Chico; CMTA; founding member Bill Gaines of Transfer Flow; and Chabin Concepts. An additional participant, Shasta College, was unable to attend.
California Association for Local Economic Development (CALED) is a statewide organization of public and private economic development organizations, providing professional development and services to assist members in creating and retaining jobs in their communities.
