The Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering and Sustainable Manufacturing (MMEM) is searching for a tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor to start August 2017. California State University, Chico is seeking faculty who are competent in their field, collaborative with colleagues and staff, and committed to student success. Candidates should have expertise in automation, robotics, PLC programming, and sustainability. The Department of MMEM is looking to grow the Sustainable Manufacturing major and a successful candidate will demonstrate a passion to take on initiatives that help to achieve this expansion. Position is contingent on funding.
The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a Ph.D. (or Ed.D.) in engineering, manufacturing, or closely related field or an earned M.S. degree in engineering, manufacturing or closely related field and significant industrial or educational experience. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, the doctorate must be complete prior to the beginning of the academic year August 2017. Candidates must have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, proficiency in written and oral English, and expertise in both manufacturing and sustainability.
Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in industrial or manufacturing engineering. Candidates should have practical experience or familiarity with manufacturing areas such as project management, operations, planning, quality, health and safety, ISO 9000/14000, life cycle assessment, and design for manufacture. Industrial experience is preferred, as is expertise in automation, robotics, PLC’s, machining, casting, and/or CAD.
This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching at the undergraduate level (this is primary) and student team advising for the senior Capstone Design Program, scholarship and professional development, and service to the department, university, and community. Preference is given for teaching experience or applied research projects with economic, environmental, or societal gains. Service includes student advising, serving on academic committees, and industrial outreach activities that promote business, workforce, manufacturing policy, and economic development. Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
About The Department
The Department of MMEM offers three accredited B.S. degree programs: Mechanical Engineering (427 current majors), Mechatronic Engineering (215 current majors), and Sustainable Manufacturing (94 current majors). The Department also offers a minor in Manufacturing (21 current minors). It is one of five departments and two programs in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management (ECC).
The department prides itself in maintaining rigorous curricula, delivering programs that are practice-oriented with a strong design focus, and having accessible faculty who provide a high degree of personal attention to all students. A major strength of the department is the Capstone Design Program for mechanical and mechatronic engineering, with about twenty-five industry-sponsored design projects completed each year. The department has several active student chapters that include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Institute of Mechatronic Engineers (AIME), Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), and Engineers for Alternative Energy (EAE). The College and Department typically support several major extracurricular student projects such as the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, the Baja SAE competition, the Formula SAE competition, the Manufacturing Challenge, and the Collegiate Wind Competition. CSU, Chico has a tradition of performing well in these competitions.
